What should I consider when retaining a private detective?

Experience in your type of case should be a primary consideration. If you are litigating a capital murder case, look for a detective who has been on legal teams that have taken such cases to trial. Likewise, if your case will require an investigator to operate in a sophisticated corporate environment, make sure that, in addition to being skilled, he or she is polished and will fit in with your company culture.

You should also determine that your prospective investigator is loyal, able to maintain confidentiality, and willing to follow evidence wherever it may lead. We strongly recommend you protect yourself by verifying the firm's license and insurance coverage.
